Handle Your Business!

The Residential Office at Taft University has added a new stipulation that “prohibits any sex act in a dorm room while one's roommate is present.” According to the video the stipulation further states that “any sexual activity in the room should not interfere with a roommate's privacy, study habits or sleep.” It is not appropriate nor respectable for school officials to interfere with something so confidential and personal. The school is definitely not violating the students Freedom of Expression because that’s disrespectful to do that in front of your roommate. Personally, I believe that this is offensive because this may actually bring unnecessary tension and conflict between the roommates because someone who may be strongly sexually active could eventually have hatred for their roommate simply because they can never “handle their business.” So overall this new policy is redundant simply because that is a private matter that shouldn’t be handled by school officials.

The Death Penalty...

I think the death penalty is totally wrong. While the crimes that some people on death row committed were totally harsh and immoral, I believe that their fate should be determined by God  and not by society. What they did was wrong but sooner or later they will get their punishment by God. Also while some people even while knowing they are going to die, still don't have any remorse for the heinous crimes they commited, there are some people who prove to be completely rehabilitated. They realize that they were completely wrong for their actions and want to be forgiven. I believe that giving someone the death penalty is in a way giving them the easy was out. I believe if you really want to punish them, lock them away for life. It will bother them more knowing that they have to be in jail the rest of their lives and they are reminded of the horrible crime they committed everyday. Killing them is not the answer.

All the Chaos!

I completely see eye to eye with President Carter that without doubt, racism is still present in our society. There are many people who resist every idea or view that President Obama may have because they cannot stand the fact that he is a black man. Because of this ignorance, anyone that is blind enough not to notice that we must be living in a non racist society nowadays! Unfortunately racism is still alive and and sometimes I wonder if we are still fighting the Civil War. On the other hand, Many fought for our First Amendment which stresses that FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS FOR ALL OF US! People are always crying that we have the right to speak our minds. Whether you’re in favor of what Kanye said or not he does have the right to express his opinion. However, he is given rights according to the First Amendment but this may have been violated to a certain extent because he invaded someone’s else rights of being able to speak. From my personal belief it was very disrespectful to bash someone else based on his own judgmental opinion. Keeping in mind he does have a strong background for putting across very controversial comments, the media is only adding this to the list. The media is being very critical towards Kanye, and is in complete favor of Taylor Swift. In actuality the media has taken the situation too far, its just an award….THE WORLD ISN’T OVER!!!

Education and Expectations

Tuesday, Barack Obama, became the first president since George Bush Senior to give a speech directly addressing the youth. Obama’s main objective was to put across the importance of education and expectations of all children this school year. The speech is to encourage our kids to study harder and make something of themselves. This is a monumental breaking point for our country and younger generation since it is an attempt to engage our children in the educational process. He expresses this concept by challenging students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. In support, he believes that people must work together and cooperate to reach the common goal of an education. To carry out this idea he calls for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives. I have confidence that he’s encouraging them to think and come to their own conclusions. The earlier kids start paying attention to politics, the better it is for our country's future. He's not out to brain wash them, but to involve them in the public debate that affects them the most.

Locke's Social Contract Theory

An agreement between two parties to potentially reach a common good is required to have an effective society. The legendary John Locke believed that moral and political obligations are dependent upon a contract between them to form society. Locke's theory of a proper government, the relationship between the government and the people is also more stable and successful with a social contract theory rather than Hobbes’. His belief of the State of Nature, the natural condition of mankind, is a state of perfect and absolute liberty to conduct one’s life as necessary for survival, free from the disturbance of others.

Effective Constitution

Through many decades, the United States proves that our Constitution is very beneficial and valuable. It did so by establishing a government that is set up to make society a better, more orderly place to live. Our governing body carry this out by distrubuting power, providing rules for conduct, providing punishments for disobeying the rules, and by providing services to citizens. Evidently, our constitution is as effective as we are led to believe, as it is the oldest and most successful in the world.
